Matvei Michkov and Patrick Maroon Hit with Maximum Fines for On-Ice Incidents
In the latest round of disciplinary actions from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, two players—Matvei Michkov of the Philadelphia Flyers and Patrick Maroon of the Chicago Blackhawks—have been handed maximum allowable fines for separate on-ice infractions.
For Michkov, the Flyers' promising rookie forward, the fine comes after an incident during the third period of Philadelphia’s 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday night. Michkov, retaliating against Kings’ player Quinton Byfield, was penalized for high-sticking after he swung his stick at Byfield’s head. The altercation began when Byfield delivered a subtle shot to Michkov’s face, followed by a push. Both players were penalized—Michkov for high-sticking, and Byfield for roughing—after the skirmish in the neutral zone.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety issued a fine of $2,473.96 to Michkov, which is the maximum amount allowed under the collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The fine will be directed toward the players' emergency assistance fund. Despite the penalty, Michkov continues to impress in his rookie campaign, leading all first-year players with 29 points (12 goals, 17 assists) through 35 games. His performance has been notable, especially with 10 multi-point games and three overtime winners under his belt.
However, this incident is not the first time Michkov has found himself at odds with his head coach, John Tortorella. The rookie has had a tumultuous relationship with Tortorella, including being benched during the third period of a 3-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks last week. Nonetheless, Michkov’s on-ice contributions remain vital to the Flyers' offense, positioning him as one of the brightest young talents in the league.
On the other side of the equation, veteran forward Patrick Maroon of the Chicago Blackhawks also received a hefty fine for his actions during a third-period altercation with Mavrik Bourque of the Dallas Stars. Maroon, who is in his 14th season in the NHL and is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, was penalized for elbowing Bourque during a roughing incident. The fine imposed on Maroon amounted to $3,385.42, also the maximum permissible under the CBA. Maroon, 36, has contributed one goal and nine points in 34 games for the Blackhawks in his first season with the team.
Both of these incidents serve as a reminder that even the brightest young stars like Michkov and seasoned veterans like Maroon are not immune from scrutiny by the NHL’s disciplinary board. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how these players adjust their game to avoid further penalties while maintaining their competitive edge.
