McLaren Wins Abu Dhabi GP as Norris Clinches Constructors' Title After 26 Years
The 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a thrilling season finale, full of drama, surprises, and high-stakes action that saw Lando Norris secure McLaren's first Constructors’ Championship in 26 years. Starting from pole position, Norris led from the front as chaos unfolded behind him. Max Verstappen, the reigning World Champion, had a tough start, colliding with McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. The incident sent both drivers into a spin, drastically affecting Piastri's race as he dropped to the back of the grid.
With McLaren's constructors' title hopes hinging on Norris, the race quickly became a test of nerves. Norris, however, held firm and delivered when it mattered most, leading the race from start to finish. The competition was fierce, with Carlos Sainz of Ferrari finishing in second place, while Charles Leclerc made an incredible comeback, moving up an impressive 11 spots to secure third place. Despite Sainz's consistent pressure, he was never quite close enough to challenge Norris, allowing McLaren to hold onto their historic victory.

For Norris, it was a bittersweet end to an incredible year. He had been a runner-up to Verstappen in the drivers' standings, but his focus remained on securing McLaren’s first constructors’ title since 1998. Over the team radio, he shared an emotional message: "Incredible, well done everyone, so proud of you all. You all deserve this. It’s been a special year. Next year’s going to be my year too."
Amidst the excitement, the race saw significant moments, such as Lewis Hamilton's emotional farewell to Mercedes. The seven-time champion finished fourth in his final race for the team, ahead of teammate George Russell, who placed fifth. Hamilton's move to Ferrari next season is expected to bring even more excitement to the grid.
Meanwhile, Verstappen, who had already clinched the drivers' title, had his own setbacks, finishing sixth in Abu Dhabi after an early clash with Piastri. The Red Bull driver, despite his dominance throughout the season, could not improve from his starting position, further highlighting McLaren's stunning rise. Sergio Perez's race also ended prematurely after a spin caused by Valtteri Bottas, leaving the Mexican driver to retire early and adding to Red Bull's disappointing performance in the constructors' standings.
McLaren’s victory marks the culmination of an incredible turnaround. The team, which was mired in the lower ranks of Formula 1 just a few years ago, has now established itself as a true title contender. Norris’s leadership and McLaren's strategic brilliance over the season made them the team to beat, proving that hard work and perseverance can bring historic success.
As McLaren celebrates their monumental achievement, the 2024 season will be remembered for many unforgettable moments, and the Abu Dhabi GP capped it off in spectacular fashion. With the constructors' title now in their hands, McLaren is ready to take on the challenges of the 2025 season with renewed ambition and momentum.
