More Rental Bikes Coming to Hamm: Expansion of Metropolrad Ruhr

Hamm is set to see a significant expansion in its rental bike system. Metropolrad Ruhr, the regional bike-sharing service, plans to increase the number of available bikes from 50 to 150. This expansion is backed by the city's own financial investment, signaling a clear commitment to sustainable transportation. Since its inception in 2010, Metropolrad has become a familiar part of daily life across the Ruhr area, offering bikes at over 200 stations in 11 cities and four counties.

In Hamm, the current seven stations—located at key points like the main train station, Heinrich-von-Kleist-Forum, and the HSHL campus—are about to multiply. The plan is to expand the network to 36 stations, placing bikes in busy areas such as train stations, district centers, and near vital public facilities. While the exact locations are still under discussion, it’s clear that Hamm is prioritizing accessibility and convenience for its residents.

Already, the 50 bikes in Hamm are rented up to 2,500 times per month, with students getting the added benefit of free rides for the first hour. This high demand highlights the importance of the bike-sharing program, which not only supports local mobility but also contributes to reducing car usage and lowering CO2 emissions—goals that are vital for the city's sustainability.

Looking to the future, the operational agreement between Nextbike, the service provider, and the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR) is set to expire in 2025. As the contract is re-tendered on a European level, Hamm aims to ensure the continuation of the bike-sharing program. Although the system is not self-sustaining, with a reported annual deficit of up to 45,000 euros, the city is willing to cover this gap to keep the program running seamlessly. This investment is part of a broader strategy to promote eco-friendly transport options and meet the city's growing demand for flexible, sustainable mobility.

In addition to expanding the bike-sharing infrastructure, Hamm is also working on improving its cycling routes and increasing its overall bike-friendliness. The city has introduced plans for wider, better-lit cycling paths, with a particular focus on connecting key areas like Herringen with Hamm Mitte. These initiatives signal a strong commitment to making Hamm a more cyclist-friendly city and ensuring that the Metropolrad Ruhr system continues to thrive for years to come.
