Nate Burleson Weighs In on Travis Hunter and Leanna Lenee's Controversy Over Social Media Drama
Travis Hunter and his fiancée Leanna Lenee have recently found themselves at the center of social media scrutiny, drawing comments from fans and even former NFL player Nate Burleson. The couple, who got engaged in February after two years together, have been navigating public attention, especially after Hunter's recent Heisman Trophy win. While the Colorado star was celebrated for his incredible achievement, Lenee’s actions during the award ceremony sparked a firestorm of criticism online.
At the ceremony, a video showed Leanna sitting down when Hunter was announced as the winner, leading social media users to question her behavior. The criticism intensified after it was noted that she was only prompted to stand up after Colorado's head coach, Deion Sanders, asked her to do so. Leanna later explained in a TikTok video that she initially hesitated to stand because she thought it was appropriate to stay seated, especially as Hunter’s mother had not yet stood. However, when she saw Hunter rise, she decided it was the right moment to get up, only to second-guess herself when a camera zoomed in on Coach Sanders.

This was not the first incident involving Leanna that went viral. Earlier, she had been criticized for her reactions to Hunter taking pictures with female fans. These moments, captured in short clips, quickly spread across social media, leading to even more backlash. In response to the criticism, Travis Hunter defended his fiancée, voicing his frustration with the online negativity surrounding their relationship.
Nate Burleson, who now works as an NFL analyst for CBS, offered his perspective on the situation. Burleson, who played in the NFL for over a decade, told TMZ that while he sympathized with Hunter's desire to defend Leanna, the couple’s openness about their personal life made them susceptible to public judgment. Burleson explained that when a couple shares details of their relationship on social media, it becomes fair game for people to offer their opinions, for better or worse. “It’s everybody else’s business because that couple put it out there,” Burleson remarked, adding, “You can’t complain when people respond.”
Despite the drama, Burleson urged people to give the young couple some grace. He reflected on his own experience with his now-wife, Atoya, noting that when they were dating, many people assumed she was with him because of his NFL prospects. Burleson expressed hope that Hunter and Leanna would work through the challenges and suggested that the couple was still young and figuring things out.
As Travis Hunter's career continues to soar, with many predicting he could be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, both he and Leanna will likely face more scrutiny in the public eye. While some might see their relationship as fodder for online gossip, Burleson’s advice is clear: give them space, and remember that they're still learning to navigate the pressures of fame.
