Orlando Magic's Success Depends on Jalen Suggs Stepping Up as a Consistent Offensive Threat
The Orlando Magic are in a position where their offense needs more than just Franz Wagner’s brilliance to succeed. While Wagner has consistently been the team’s offensive leader, scoring big and carrying the load, it is clear the Magic need a second reliable scorer to ease the pressure off their star. That responsibility now falls squarely on the shoulders of Jalen Suggs, but his inconsistency is becoming a major issue for Orlando’s playoff aspirations.
Jalen Suggs has shown flashes of potential this season, with notable offensive breakthroughs, but he has struggled to be the consistent second option that the Magic desperately need. The team’s most recent loss to the Philadelphia 76ers highlighted these struggles. Despite a strong fourth-quarter performance where Suggs scored 15 of his 22 points, he still missed a critical, off-balance three-pointer in the final minute that could have brought the Magic closer. It was a tough moment, one that reflected his season so far—a combination of brilliance and missed opportunities.

Since Paolo Banchero’s injury, Suggs has had the chance to step up, averaging 15.2 points per game. However, his shooting efficiency has been poor, hitting only 40.1% of his field goals and just 28.1% from beyond the arc. These numbers are far from what Orlando needs from their second scorer, and they have highlighted the challenges Suggs faces when trying to lead the offense. His turnovers, at 2.8 per game, also add to the frustration as the Magic struggle to find rhythm on that side of the floor.
The need for Suggs to improve is even more pressing with Banchero sidelined. In games with Banchero, Suggs had been shooting a solid 42.5% and contributing well as a secondary creator. Without him, however, Suggs has struggled to replicate that same level of production. The Magic’s offense has sputtered as a result, often relying too heavily on Wagner. This puts enormous pressure on the team, particularly as defenses can load up on Wagner knowing the Magic lack another reliable scoring option.
As the Magic continue to fight for a playoff spot, their hope lies in Suggs stepping up as a more consistent offensive force. His ability to create shots and keep defenses honest will make a world of difference. It’s not just about scoring more points—it’s about making the right plays and providing the type of offensive stability that lets Wagner focus on what he does best. Until Banchero returns, the Magic need Suggs to embrace this responsibility fully. The question remains whether he can find that consistency, or if the Magic will have to explore other solutions as the season unfolds.
