Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 'Lonely' Life in Montecito Revealed by Neighbors
Recently, there has been growing attention surrounding the life of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in Montecito, California, as a new documentary titled Harry: The Lost Prince airs in Germany. The documentary, directed by award-winning filmmaker Ulrike Grunewald, delves into the couple's attempts to carve out a life of financial independence and freedom after stepping down from their royal duties in 2020.
Grunewald, who has been a royal correspondent for decades, was intrigued by the couple’s high expectations of themselves as global benefactors, working to bring about tangible change. However, she notes that, despite their ambitions, Harry and Meghan have struggled to live up to this image. "They set the bar very high," Grunewald explains, "but so far, they have not lived up to it at all."

The filmmaker traveled to Montecito to investigate further, speaking with neighbors and trying to gain insight into the couple's life since their move to California. One neighbor, Richard Mineards, painted a picture of the Sussexes' isolated existence in the community. He observed that Harry and Meghan rarely take part in local social activities, often keeping to themselves. While Meghan is occasionally spotted at the farmers' market or walking her dog, Harry remains an even rarer sight. "You just don’t see much of him," Mineards said, lamenting the couple’s detachment from their surroundings. Despite their proximity to Hollywood and elite circles, they seem to have made little effort to integrate with their community.
Harry and Meghan’s neighborly isolation is striking, given the star-studded nature of Montecito. The couple’s close ties to celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, and Tyler Perry are well known, yet their interactions with others in the area remain minimal. In fact, the couple's reputation in Montecito seems to be one of absence, rather than involvement.
As the documentary explores, their public and private lives seem to be at odds with their expectations. The Sussexes initially hoped to build a new life full of purpose and independence, but four years after their departure from the royal family, the reality of their situation is quite different. Their Archewell Foundation, which they launched to promote charitable causes, has seen a significant decline in donations, dropping from $13 million in 2021 to just $2 million in the following year. This, combined with the fact that they reportedly only work one hour a week for the foundation, raises questions about the sustainability of their new lifestyle.
Grunewald also observes a shift in the couple’s relationship. Once viewed as a power duo, Harry and Meghan now appear to be navigating separate paths, both personally and professionally. This change is reflected in the way they now appear in public, often apart from one another. It’s clear that their journey to establish themselves as independent, influential figures has not been as seamless as they hoped.
The documentary sheds light on the challenges faced by Harry and Meghan as they seek to redefine their place in the world, far from the royal spotlight. Their story, still unfolding, serves as a stark reminder of the difficulties that come with seeking freedom and independence while managing the weight of public expectations. As their neighbors suggest, despite the glamorous surroundings of Montecito, the couple's life may not be as fulfilling or connected as they once imagined.
