RSPCA Rescues 50 Kelpies from One Property in South Australia
Recently, the RSPCA South Australia has faced a massive intake of dogs, with 50 kelpies being surrendered from a single property. This has marked the beginning of what is expected to be a busy summer for the organization. Although an investigation is underway regarding the circumstances behind this sudden surrender, there is some good news for dog lovers. Many of these dogs are now in foster care, and soon, they will be available for adoption.
Upon arriving at the RSPCA facility, all 50 kelpies underwent thorough veterinary checks, with some requiring ongoing medical treatment. The RSPCA CEO, Marcus Gehrig, assured the public that every dog would be desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, and treated for parasites before they are made available for adoption. Additionally, some of these dogs are undergoing specialized behavior training, which will ensure they are ready for their new homes.

This large influx of dogs has coincided with the launch of RSPCA’s national Guardian Angel Christmas Appeal. The appeal aims to raise vital funds to support the care and rehabilitation of thousands of animals that will be rescued over the summer. According to Gehrig, based on past experience, the organization anticipates caring for around 2,000 animals throughout the festive season. By becoming a Guardian Angel for one of these animals, people can help ensure that their care needs are met until they are ready to find a loving home.
In the previous financial year, RSPCA South Australia successfully cared for nearly 6,000 animals and helped over 3,200 find new homes. At the moment, almost 750 animals are in the organization’s care, with nearly half of them staying at the O'Halloran Hill animal care center. The RSPCA relies heavily on donations to provide the necessary medical care, food, and shelter to these animals, and this summer, the demand for support is expected to increase significantly.
If you're considering adopting a pet, now is a great time to explore the available dogs, especially with these recent rescues. With the continued support of the public, RSPCA SA hopes to provide these rescued animals a second chance at life in a loving home.
