Shavkat Rakhmonov Hands Ian Machado Garry First UFC Defeat at UFC 310
At UFC 310 in Las Vegas, the highly anticipated co-main event delivered a significant turning point in the welterweight division. Shavkat Rakhmonov of Kazakhstan handed Ian Machado Garry, the rising Irish star, his first professional defeat in a tactical five-round battle that showcased grappling prowess and resilience. Both fighters entered the octagon with unbeaten records and reputations as future stars, but it was Rakhmonov’s superior ground game that earned him the unanimous decision victory.
Rakhmonov, known as the UFC’s “Boogeyman,” carried his undefeated record into the bout, facing an opponent who had rapidly climbed the UFC ranks since his 2021 debut. Machado Garry had taken the fight on short notice after welterweight champion Belal Muhammad withdrew due to injury. This set the stage for a high-stakes contest, with the winner earning a title shot.

The fight began cautiously, with both fighters demonstrating mutual respect as they sought to establish dominance. The early rounds saw limited striking, with Rakhmonov landing a few impactful right hands and Machado Garry countering with an array of kicks in the third round. However, it was in the fourth round that Rakhmonov’s grappling made the difference, as he secured key takedowns and delivered heavy ground-and-pound strikes.
Machado Garry’s best moment came in the final round when he took Rakhmonov’s back and attempted a rear-naked choke, igniting the crowd’s excitement. Despite the Irishman’s efforts, Rakhmonov showcased his composure, defending the submission attempt and steering the fight to the judges’ decision.
After the fight, both competitors demonstrated sportsmanship, kneeling together in the octagon and exchanging words of respect. Rakhmonov, now 19-0, solidified his position as a top contender and called out Belal Muhammad for a title fight. Machado Garry, while disappointed, gained recognition for his performance against one of the most feared fighters in the division.
UFC 310 also featured other memorable moments, including Alexandre Pantoja’s dominant flyweight title defense against Kai Asakura. The event set the stage for thrilling future matchups, ensuring fans have plenty to look forward to in the months ahead.
