"Squid Game Returns: What You Need to Know Before Season 2"
It’s been three years since Squid Game took the world by storm, becoming Netflix’s most popular series ever. With the long-awaited return of the show on December 26, fans are eager to see what’s next in this dark, high-stakes competition. But before diving back into the world of deadly games, here’s a quick refresher on what happened in the first season, so you’re prepared for what’s to come in Season 2.
In Season 1, we were introduced to Seong Gi-hun, a desperate gambler and deadbeat father who’s down on his luck. Despite his love for his daughter, Gi-hun struggles with debt and the reality of his life. Everything changes when he meets a mysterious salesman who offers him the chance to win a fortune by participating in a secret game. Gi-hun reluctantly joins and soon finds himself transported to a secluded island, where he and 455 other participants, all in dire situations, compete in children's games with deadly consequences.

The first game, “Red Light, Green Light,” sets the tone for the brutal and merciless nature of the competition. A large portion of the contestants is eliminated in this opening game, and the survivors quickly realize that their lives are at risk. In a shocking turn, they vote to end the game and return to their normal lives. However, the lure of the unimaginable prize money pulls them back into the game, even though they know the risks. Gi-hun and his new allies face more challenges and obstacles, all while uncovering dark secrets behind the mysterious organization running the game.
Among the most memorable characters is the Front Man, the masked figure overseeing the game, whose true identity is slowly revealed. We also follow the story of Jun-ho, a police officer who infiltrates the game in search of his missing brother, who is revealed to be deeply connected to the operation. But by the season finale, the stakes become even higher, and Gi-hun is left to confront his own humanity as he becomes the sole survivor.
Season 1 concludes with Gi-hun walking away with a fortune, but not without a heavy emotional cost. He seeks revenge against those responsible for the game, particularly the enigmatic old man, Oh Il-nam, who was revealed to be the mastermind behind it all. With Il-nam’s death, Gi-hun is left with no leads on how to stop the game, but his thirst for vengeance leads him to make a pivotal decision. Rather than joining his daughter in the United States, he turns around and vows to put an end to the deadly competition.
As Squid Game Season 2 arrives, we’ll see Gi-hun, now a changed man, confronting the forces behind the game. He’s no longer the man he was before — he is driven, determined, and focused on one goal: to destroy the game once and for all. Lee Jung-jae, who portrays Gi-hun, teases that viewers will see a drastically different version of his character, one with a strong conviction and a goal that will push him to his limits.
The drama promises more twists, betrayals, and shocking developments as Gi-hun faces off against old enemies like the Front Man, while uncovering even darker truths about the competition. As we gear up for the premiere of Season 2, we’re left wondering what new horrors and alliances await in this deadly, high-stakes game.
