Survivors Share Harrowing Moments of Azerbaijan Plane Crash
On Christmas Day, a tragic plane crash involving an Azerbaijan Airlines flight claimed the lives of 38 people near Aktau, Kazakhstan. Survivors of this horrifying incident have shared chilling accounts of what happened in the moments leading up to the crash, offering insight into the chaos onboard.
Flight attendant Zulfuqar Asadov, one of the survivors, described how he sustained injuries during the crash. The Embraer 190 aircraft was en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia. However, the flight faced unforeseen challenges as it crossed into Russian airspace, reportedly coming under fire from Russian air defense systems. Diverted across the Caspian Sea due to safety concerns, the aircraft ultimately crash-landed in Kazakhstan.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev later stated that initial investigations suggest the plane was damaged by external factors while over Russian territory near Grozny. According to Aliyev, the aircraft suffered significant damage to its tail section, with apparent shrapnel holes indicating possible fire from the ground. Survivors reported hearing explosions outside the aircraft, followed by an uncontrollable descent.
The president also mentioned suspicions of electronic warfare compromising the aircraft's systems, although the flight recorder data is still under analysis. Russian authorities initially attributed the crash to alternate causes, including fog and potential bird strikes. However, Aliyev criticized these explanations as attempts to divert attention from the incident's gravity.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences and offered an apology for the tragic event, though he stopped short of admitting direct responsibility. The Kremlin's account pointed to heightened regional tensions, with Russian air defenses actively countering Ukrainian drone attacks at the time.
