Sydney Teen's Dream Football Trip Hit by Storm, but a Silver Lining Emerges
Imagine saving up for months, flying across the world, and landing in Liverpool to witness the most anticipated football match of the year—the historic Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool. That was the dream of 15-year-old Mackenzie, a diehard Everton fan from Sydney, Australia. He had carefully saved up enough money to travel 17,000 kilometers for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see his beloved Everton play their fierce rivals at the iconic Goodison Park.
However, Mackenzie’s dream took an unexpected turn when Storm Darragh hit the UK with fierce winds and torrential rain, reaching speeds of up to 110 km/h. The Merseyside derby, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, was postponed due to the dangerous weather conditions, leaving Mackenzie devastated. “I was a bit shocked because it’s a bit unheard of for games to be cancelled like that,” Mackenzie told BBC radio, sharing his disappointment at the decision.

The match, which was supposed to be Everton's last ever derby at Goodison Park before they move to a new stadium, had the added emotional weight of being the final chapter at their historic 132-year-old ground. For a young football fan like Mackenzie, attending this game meant everything. His father, Matt Leese, expressed how heartbroken he felt for his son, who had been looking forward to the match for months. Mackenzie’s uncle, understanding his nephew’s passion, even gave up his season ticket for the game to make sure Mackenzie could be there to witness history.
Despite the postponement, the story took a turn for the better. Seamus Coleman, Everton’s captain, reached out to Mackenzie with a video message, expressing his regret over the cancellation and inviting the young fan to join the team at their training session. “That’s amazing news. Every cloud has a silver lining,” Mackenzie remarked, his spirits lifted by the gesture.
Mackenzie had already enjoyed part of his trip by witnessing Everton’s impressive 4-0 victory over Wolverhampton just days before. His mother, who hails from Liverpool, proudly explained how her son had worked hard to fund the trip on his own, setting aside his savings to make his dream a reality. “He said, ‘I’d really like to go, Mum – will you let me go?’ I said: ‘I can’t stop you if you’ve got the money.’ We’re very proud of him,” she shared.
Though the rescheduled date for the Merseyside derby is likely to be in the new year when Mackenzie is back in Australia, the experience has already become a cherished memory. Mackenzie’s passion for football and his dedication to seeing his team play at Goodison Park will live on, and who knows? He might just get to return one day to witness that historic derby after all.
