Teen Driver Jailed for Killing Three Friends After Laughing Gas and 100mph Crash

In a heartbreaking tragedy, 19-year-old Thomas Johnson has been sentenced to over nine years in prison for causing the deaths of three teenage friends in a high-speed crash. The incident, which took place in June 2023 in Marcham, Oxfordshire, involved Johnson inhaling laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, while driving at speeds of over 100mph. The three young men—Elliot Pullen, 17, and Ethan Goddard and Daniel Hancock, both 18—lost their lives when Johnson lost control of his BMW 3 Series, crashing into a tree.

Johnson's reckless actions behind the wheel have left an indelible mark on the victims' families. As he was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court, Judge Emma Nott made it clear that Johnson would "forever be defined" by his "teenage mistakes," with his life permanently altered by his actions. Despite suffering life-threatening injuries himself, including brain trauma, a collapsed lung, and the permanent loss of sight in one eye, Johnson’s punishment cannot bring back the lives of his friends or erase the pain his actions have caused.

Before the crash, mobile phone footage taken inside the vehicle showed Johnson and his passengers inhaling nitrous oxide from balloons, a dangerous practice that impairs judgment and reaction times. The car was recorded reaching speeds of up to 97mph just before the crash, far exceeding the speed limit of 30mph for that section of the road. The police investigation revealed that the car's stability systems had been disabled, contributing to the vehicle's uncontrollable skidding before the crash.

The families of the victims have expressed their grief and called for greater awareness about the dangers of reckless driving and drug use behind the wheel. "Please don’t be that driver who shows such disregard for their friends' lives," urged Daniel Hancock's family. They, along with the other families, hope that Johnson’s case serves as a stark reminder to other young drivers of the devastating consequences of risky behavior.

Despite Johnson’s claim that he could not remember the events leading up to the crash, the court’s evidence painted a clear picture of a young man who, driven by the desire for thrills, made a series of life-altering decisions. The families have united in their plea to others, particularly young people, to think twice before engaging in such dangerous acts. They hope that by sharing their story, others will recognize the importance of responsible driving and the irreversible consequences that can arise from a moment’s poor judgment.

This tragic case serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly lives can be lost due to dangerous behavior on the roads, and how crucial it is for young drivers to understand the responsibility they carry behind the wheel.
