The Voice Kim Jong Un Wants to Silence: Kim Seongmin's Fight for Truth
Kim Seongmin, a North Korean defector, has been battling a terminal illness for the past seven years, yet he remains unwavering in his mission to bring the truth to the people of North Korea. His fight against cancer, which has spread to his lungs, brain, and liver, has reached its final stages. Doctors have given him only months to live. Despite the excruciating pain that keeps him awake at night, Kim continues to broadcast twice a day into the isolated and oppressed country. Operating from his modest home on Ganghwa Island in South Korea, he runs Free North Korea Radio, a station that provides uncensored news and information to the people of North Korea, who are otherwise trapped in an information vacuum.
Kim, now 62, sees the North Korean regime’s information control as a profound injustice. He describes the situation as “like frogs trapped in a deep well,” unable to see the world beyond the oppressive walls built by the regime. His radio station is one of the few channels through which North Koreans can receive a glimpse of the truth, an antidote to the state-sponsored propaganda they are subjected to daily. Through his broadcasts, Kim hopes to open their eyes to the flaws of their political system and to the freedoms they are denied.

Despite his deteriorating health, Kim's determination to continue his work remains unshaken. “We broadcast to help them realize that there is something wrong with their political system,” he says. His broadcasts are not just about delivering news—they are about offering a chance at awakening, a possibility for North Koreans to question the government they are forced to follow.
Kim’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. His work is a thorn in the side of Kim Jong Un, North Korea's supreme leader, who would like nothing more than to silence dissenting voices like Kim’s. Yet, even as his health declines, Kim Seongmin remains steadfast in his commitment to his cause. His dedication underscores the critical role of independent journalism in a world where misinformation runs rampant, and quality news is more crucial than ever.
Kim’s legacy, whether he is able to witness it or not, will be remembered by the millions of North Koreans who, for the first time, hear an alternative perspective to the one they’ve known all their lives.
