Tom Willander Shines with Two Goals as Sawyer Mynio Joins Canada’s Lineup at World Junior Championships
At the 2024 World Junior Championships, two Vancouver Canucks prospects made significant impacts for their respective teams. On the fourth day of the tournament, Tom Willander, a Canucks first-round pick from 2023, showcased his skills in Sweden's 7-5 victory over Switzerland. Willander was instrumental in his team’s success, scoring twice and adding an assist. His first goal came early on a power play, with a precise wrist shot that found its way through traffic, marking his first goal of the tournament. Sweden’s dominance was further underscored as Willander netted a second goal with another wrist shot from the slot, helping Sweden establish a 6-1 lead by the second intermission.

Willander’s performance didn’t stop there. Along with his two goals, he assisted on a crucial play, contributing to Sweden’s commanding position. By the end of the game, Willander had tallied five points (2 goals, 3 assists) in just three matches, ranking as the second-highest scoring defenceman in the tournament. Sweden is now a perfect 3-0, and Willander’s play has been a key factor in their success. For the Swiss, Vancouver's Basile Sansonnens, a seventh-round pick in the 2024 draft, played 16:44 and registered one shot on goal. While Switzerland fell short, Sansonnens continues to be a reliable part of their defensive corps.
Meanwhile, Canada saw the debut of another Canucks prospect, Sawyer Mynio, who had previously been a healthy scratch in Canada’s first two games. The 2023 third-round pick played on the third defensive pairing and looked calm and composed throughout the match. Mynio contributed offensively as well, picking up an assist on Canada’s 2-0 goal. He passed the puck to Caden Price, whose shot took a lucky bounce off the boards, finding the back of the net. Canada would later seal a 3-0 win over Germany, with Mynio earning praise for his solid defensive play and contribution to the team’s victory.
Looking ahead, both Canucks prospects have more action in store. On New Year’s Eve, Sweden, led by Willander, faces Czechia, while Mynio and Canada will take on the USA.
