Tourist Killed in Shark Attack Near Marsa Alam, Red Sea

A tragic shark attack has claimed the life of one tourist and left another injured near Egypt's Marsa Alam resort, a popular destination on the Red Sea coast. The incident occurred on Sunday, when two foreign nationals were attacked while swimming in the deep waters north of Marsa Alam, a renowned hotspot for divers and marine life enthusiasts. While the Egyptian Ministry of Environment did not reveal the victims' identities, reports indicate that both individuals were Italian nationals. One of the victims, a 48-year-old man from Rome, tragically lost his life, while the other, a 69-year-old male, sustained injuries. Both were quickly transported to a hospital in Port Ghalib, a town situated about 30 miles from Marsa Alam.

According to officials, the shark attack took place in waters outside the designated swimming area, which is generally considered safe for tourists. Swimming beyond the marked zones, especially in deeper waters, is prohibited in the region. Following the incident, authorities closed the jetties and surrounding swimming areas to ensure public safety while investigations into the attack continue. This area of the Red Sea is well-known for its rich coral reefs and vibrant marine life, making it a popular spot for diving and underwater exploration. However, shark attacks, while rare, do occasionally occur. In fact, this is the first fatal attack in the region since June 2023, when a Russian tourist was killed by a tiger shark in nearby Hurghada.

The environment ministry has urged visitors to stay within the designated swimming areas to reduce the risk of such incidents. Despite the rare nature of shark attacks in this part of the world, the Red Sea is home to a variety of shark species. Over the past decade, there have been four confirmed fatalities due to shark attacks in Egypt, making incidents like this all the more tragic and alarming for both locals and visitors alike.

This devastating event has cast a shadow over the otherwise tranquil reputation of Marsa Alam. As investigations unfold, authorities are expected to implement even stricter safety measures to ensure that future tourists can continue to enjoy the stunning beauty of the Red Sea while minimizing the risks associated with its wildlife. For now, the beaches remain closed, and the community is left mourning the loss of one of its visitors to this rare and tragic occurrence.
