US Government Shutdown Looms as Trump and Musk Push for Last-Minute Changes
The threat of a US government shutdown is becoming a reality as Congress struggles to pass a crucial funding bill. With a deadline fast approaching, President-elect Donald Trump has stirred the pot, urging Republican lawmakers to reject the bipartisan bill meant to avert the shutdown. Instead, he’s calling for a new, more streamlined deal. His intervention has thrown Congress into turmoil, with lawmakers scrambling to address the issue before federal funding runs out this Friday.
Trump’s opposition, followed by strong backing from tech mogul Elon Musk, has led to a dramatic shift in the political landscape. The proposed bill, known as a continuing resolution, would temporarily fund the government and prevent offices from shutting down, including services like Border Patrol and the National Park Service. But it also includes $110 billion in disaster relief, $30 billion in aid to farmers, and an increase in lawmaker pay. These provisions have become sticking points for conservatives who argue that the bill is too expensive.

Trump has called on Republicans to be “smart and tough,” asserting that they should reject the current version of the bill and demand a better deal. He’s even threatened to help unseat any Republican who votes in favor of the bill, a move that has caused tension within the party. His remarks are partly driven by his long-standing criticism of government spending and his push for fiscal responsibility. He has also proposed combining the temporary funding with a controversial debt ceiling increase, which would allow the government to borrow more money to pay its bills.
Despite the urgent need to prevent a shutdown, many Republicans are caught in a bind. While the bill provides essential disaster relief, including aid for areas devastated by hurricanes, it also includes a pay raise for lawmakers—the first since 2009. This, along with the proposed spending increase, has drawn sharp criticism from conservatives, including Musk, who has openly lobbied against the bill. His influence is considerable, as he has the financial power to impact elections, further complicating the situation for lawmakers.
As the clock ticks down to the Friday deadline, the future of the spending bill hangs in the balance. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and other Republican leaders are under intense pressure to negotiate a solution that appeases both factions of their party. Meanwhile, Democrats have expressed frustration with the GOP’s infighting, with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries accusing Republicans of sabotaging the bipartisan agreement and putting the country at risk.
With a potential shutdown just days away, the stakes could not be higher. If Congress fails to reach a deal, millions of Americans will feel the effects of shuttered government offices and suspended services. The next few days will be critical as lawmakers rush to find a resolution before the deadline hits.
