Utica Singer Sofronio Vasquez Wins ‘The Voice,’ Making History for Upstate NY
In a thrilling finale on Tuesday, December 11, 2024, Sofronio Vasquez, a singer from Utica, New York, claimed victory on season 26 of NBC’s "The Voice." His win not only brought him a $100,000 prize and a record deal with Universal Music Group, but also made him the second winner from Upstate New York in the history of the show. Vasquez’s triumph is significant in more ways than one, as he became the first Asian and Filipino contestant to win "The Voice" in the United States.
Vasquez, originally from Mindanao in the Philippines, captivated audiences throughout the season with his powerful voice and heartfelt performances. His journey to the top was nothing short of inspiring. The 32-year-old, who now resides in Utica, grew up in a poor family in the Philippines. Music, he said, was always his way out, providing him with an opportunity to support his family. Despite the hardships, including the loss of his father in 2018, Vasquez’s passion for music remained strong, even while working as a dental assistant in Utica. His victory on "The Voice" fulfilled a dream that began long before he ever stepped onto the stage.
Throughout the season, Vasquez’s performances were nothing short of spectacular. From his Blind Audition, where he received all four judges’ chairs with his rendition of Mary J. Blige’s "I’m Goin’ Down," to soulful renditions of iconic songs like "Unstoppable" by Sia, "If I Can Dream" by Elvis Presley, and "Crying" by Roy Orbison, Vasquez showcased his range and ability to connect with listeners. His performance of "Every Breath You Take" with Sting and his duet with Michael Bublé on "Who’s Lovin’ You" in the finale were memorable moments that left audiences in awe.

Vasquez was coached by Michael Bublé, who celebrated his first win as a coach on the show. Bublé, who took on the challenge of mentoring Vasquez in his first season as a coach, was emotional after the win, acknowledging the significance of the moment. “You are the voice of so many people, not just in the Philippines, but all over the world,” Bublé told Vasquez, adding that his victory was a proud moment for Asians everywhere.
The finale also saw Vasquez’s Team Bublé teammate, Shye, finishing in second place. The rest of the top five included Sydney Sterlace from Team Gwen in third, Danny Joseph from Team Reba in fourth, and Jeremy Beloate from Team Snoop in fifth.
Vasquez’s win marks a historic moment not only for him but also for Upstate New York. He follows in the footsteps of Sawyer Fredericks, who won "The Voice" in season 8. Fredericks, from Fultonville, New York, was the show’s youngest winner at just 16 years old. Now, Vasquez joins him as one of only two winners from the region.
As he reflects on his journey, Vasquez shared his gratitude for the opportunity to represent his hometown, Utica, and his home country of the Philippines. "It’s such a blessing, and I can’t wait to bring the trophy home," he said before the finale aired. His win is a testament to his determination, talent, and the power of music to change lives.
With this victory, Sofronio Vasquez has not only made history on "The Voice," but he has also opened doors for many aspiring artists, especially those from humble beginnings, proving that dreams are within reach, no matter where you start.
