Windies Level Series with Thrilling Win Over India in Women's T20I
In an electrifying clash at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, West Indies Women produced a stellar performance to defeat India by nine wickets, leveling the three-match T20I series 1-1. This victory, led by a magnificent unbeaten 85 from skipper Hayley Matthews, ended the Windies’ nine-match losing streak against India in T20s, setting up an intense decider.
The match began with West Indies winning the toss and opting to field. India’s batting lineup, led by stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana, posted a competitive total of 159/9 in their 20 overs. Mandhana top-scored with a resilient 62 off 41 balls, supported by Deepti Sharma’s 17 and Richa Ghosh’s quickfire 32. Despite these contributions, India struggled to maintain momentum, particularly in the death overs, as the Windies bowlers applied pressure. Deandra Dottin (2/14), Afy Fletcher (2/28), and Matthews (2/36) were instrumental in restricting India.

The West Indies chase was a masterclass in aggressive and calculated batting. Qiana Joseph set the tone with a fiery 38 off 22 balls, smashing six boundaries and two sixes. She and Matthews added 66 runs for the first wicket, putting India’s bowlers on the back foot. Joseph’s dismissal in the seventh over brought vice-captain Shemaine Campbelle to the crease, who played a steady supporting role with an unbeaten 29.
Matthews, however, was the star of the show. Her knock of 85 not out came off just 47 balls and featured a dazzling 17 boundaries. Her timing, shot selection, and calm demeanor ensured that West Indies maintained control throughout the innings. Matthews brought up her half-century with a flurry of boundaries and finished the match in style, securing victory with 26 balls to spare.
This emphatic performance by the Windies not only showcased their potential but also highlighted the brilliance of Matthews as a leader and player. With the series now tied, both teams will head into the final T20I eager to clinch the trophy.
