
Winona Area Public Schools Announces Exciting Changes for Elementary School Structure Starting in 2025
The Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) board has recently approved a significant reconfiguration of the district’s elementary schools, with plans set to take effect beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. This restructuring aims to better serve the needs of students and create a more efficient educational environment as the district continues to grow and evolve.
Starting in the fall of 2025, all kindergarten students will attend Goodview Elementary, which includes those enrolled in the RÃos Spanish Dual Language Immersion program. This marks a major shift in how the district organizes its youngest learners, consolidating kindergarten classes at one location. In addition, students in grades 1-4 will be divided between Jefferson Elementary and Washington-Kosciusko Elementary, ensuring a more balanced distribution of students across the district. The current Goodview attendance area will be incorporated into the Jefferson attendance zone, while the boundaries for Washington-Kosciusko may see some minor adjustments to accommodate this change.

One important aspect of this change is the impact on the RÃos program. All students in grades 1-4 who are enrolled in the RÃos Spanish Dual Language Immersion program will transition to Washington-Kosciusko Elementary, offering them a specialized educational experience in a more focused setting. Meanwhile, the Community Kids Preschool program will continue to be available at both Goodview and Washington-Kosciusko, maintaining access to early childhood education across the district.
The reconfiguration does not include any changes to the middle school or high school levels, so Winona Middle School, Winona Senior High School, and the Winona Area Learning Center will remain unaffected by these adjustments. This allows for a seamless continuation of education for older students while the elementary level undergoes significant restructuring.
WAPS officials have emphasized that further details about these changes will be shared with families in the coming months, ensuring that everyone is well-informed and prepared for the transition. The decision to reconfigure the elementary schools is part of the district’s ongoing efforts to enhance the educational experience for all students, with a focus on balancing class sizes, improving resources, and better supporting the needs of the community.
