A New Snowstorm Threatens Spain with Intense Weather Conditions
The arrival of yet another snowstorm is set to disrupt Spain’s weather this week, bringing heavy winds, freezing temperatures, and significant snowfall. Starting Wednesday, this new storm will unleash its full force across the country, continuing the turbulent weather pattern observed in recent weeks.
As the week begins, much of the Iberian Peninsula is already experiencing rain, with notable exceptions in the Mediterranean region. Winds are expected to calm by Tuesday, but the reprieve will be brief. By midweek, a fresh storm system will sweep in, triggering another maritime storm. The northern regions will bear the brunt of icy winds, leading to substantial snowfall, particularly in mountainous areas. By Thursday, snow is expected to descend to lower altitudes, reaching levels between 500 and 700 meters.

The intensity of this storm, named “Herminia,” is a continuation of a severe winter that has battered parts of Spain. Over the weekend, gale-force winds reached hurricane strength in northern mountainous regions, such as the Picos de Europa, with gusts exceeding 150 km/h. Coastal areas were also hit hard, with waves as high as 10 meters crashing against Galicia’s shores. Warnings for extreme maritime conditions remain in place, with dangerous sea states persisting through early Tuesday.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to drop significantly across the country on Tuesday, especially in the east, where a dramatic 8 to 10-degree plunge is forecast. Snowfall will intensify in central and northern mountain ranges, with accumulations of up to 10 cm in some areas. Coastal regions in the north will also see heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, making travel and outdoor activities hazardous.
As the week progresses, the arrival of cold northern winds will bring even more snowfall, potentially affecting major transportation routes in northern and central Spain. Although the weekend promises more stable weather, nighttime frosts are likely to expand across the interior, while daytime temperatures might recover slightly. Mediterranean coastal areas may see highs above 18°C, offering some respite.
Spain’s weather service, AEMET, has emphasized the need for caution and preparedness during this period. With warnings in place for strong winds, heavy snow, and significant temperature drops, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
Stay safe, and prepare for yet another wintry challenge as this powerful snowstorm approaches.
