Amazon Exits Quebec, Impacting 1,700 Jobs in Major Shake-Up
In a surprising development, Amazon has announced plans to cease its operations in Quebec within the next two months. This decision will result in the closure of seven facilities, including major sites in Laval and Montreal, affecting approximately 1,700 employees. Additionally, numerous delivery contractors and small businesses tied to Amazon's logistics network will feel the impact. The company stated that the transition aims to return to a third-party delivery model supported by local businesses, similar to its approach before 2020.
While some speculate that recent unionization efforts in Laval might have influenced this decision, Amazon has categorically denied any link between the closures and union activities. The Laval warehouse became unionized last year after significant efforts by the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN). Despite the union’s recognition and the start of negotiations, no collective agreement was finalized.

Amazon’s spokesperson emphasized that the decision was part of a strategic review of operations in Quebec, aimed at improving cost efficiency and maintaining service quality. They reassured employees that support measures, including up to 14 weeks of severance pay and job placement resources, would be provided to those affected.
This shift aligns with Amazon’s broader strategy to streamline operations while leveraging partnerships with smaller, local delivery companies. Intelcom, an existing subcontractor, is reportedly preparing to step in and expand its role in package delivery and sorting within Quebec.
The ripple effects of this closure are vast. Hundreds of contractors operating Amazon-branded delivery trucks will need to adjust to new logistics requirements, potentially relocating or partnering with other subcontractors. Amazon has extended offers to some workers to take on roles in other regions of Canada or the United States.
This decision underscores a pivotal moment for Amazon’s workforce dynamics in Quebec. It highlights ongoing tensions between large corporations and labor movements, as well as the challenges of balancing operational efficiency with employee relations.
