Storm Éowyn: Amber Weather Warning Issued as 90mph Winds Threaten the UK
Storm Éowyn, the fifth named storm of the 2024-25 season, is set to bring severe weather to the UK, with warnings issued for dangerously strong winds and heavy rain. As the storm intensifies, an amber weather warning has been issued by the Met Office, particularly highlighting coastal areas that will be impacted by wind gusts reaching up to 90mph. Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, northern England, and North Wales will be particularly affected by this storm, with the Met Office issuing an amber weather warning for these areas from 06:00 GMT to 21:00 GMT on Friday. Further inland, gusts of 60-70mph are anticipated, but along the coast and on elevated terrain, wind speeds could climb to dangerous levels, possibly even exceeding 90mph in certain spots.
In addition to the high winds, heavy rain is forecast to spread across the UK, with a yellow warning in place for the southwest, including west Wales, from midnight to 09:00 GMT on Friday. Snow will also affect higher ground in Scotland and northern England, with up to 25cm of snow expected on some of the highest hills. This combination of severe wind, heavy rain, and snow will create hazardous conditions, especially for travel and outdoor activities.
In Ireland, Storm Éowyn will bring similarly severe conditions, with gusts expected to exceed 80mph in some regions, including Clare, Cork, Kerry, and Limerick. The Irish Met Éireann has issued a red warning, the highest level of alert, for these areas, with the potential for wind speeds reaching up to 120mph along the west coast.
As the storm continues to affect the UK, disruptions to transport services, including rail, air, and ferry cancellations, are likely. Additionally, some roads may be closed, and there is the potential for significant damage to infrastructure. Forecasters are warning that the storm's impact could extend into Saturday, with ongoing high winds and the possibility of further weather warnings over the weekend.
