Barcelona Triumphs Over Athletic in Supercopa Semifinal with 2-0 Victory
In an exciting semifinal of the Supercopa de España, Barcelona emerged victorious against Athletic Club, securing a 2-0 win and booking their place in the final. The match, held in Yeda, saw Barcelona display a commanding performance, with key contributions from Gavi and Lamine Yamal.
The game started with Athletic having a strong opening, but Barcelona soon gained control. The first breakthrough came in the 16th minute when Gavi capitalized on a perfect assist from Alejandro Balde. The 19-year-old midfielder, who had been recovering from injury, made no mistake in beating Athletic's goalkeeper Unai Simón with a composed finish. The goal injected confidence into the Barcelona side, and despite some sporadic chances for Athletic, they struggled to break down the Catalan defense.

Athletic, on the other hand, fought hard but couldn’t convert their opportunities into goals. Iñaki Williams had a few promising moments, but his efforts were either blocked or thwarted by Barcelona’s defense and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who was solid between the posts. The closest they came to scoring was when Iñaki Williams thought he had equalized, only for the goal to be ruled out due to a VAR decision that determined he was offside after a misjudged back pass from Frenkie de Jong.
As the second half progressed, Barcelona began to look more threatening on the counter-attack. Lamine Yamal, who had returned to action after a month’s absence, sealed the victory in the 51st minute. Gavi, who was instrumental in Barcelona's attacking play, delivered a brilliant assist to Yamal, who expertly finished past Simón to double Barcelona’s lead. It was a return to form for the young prodigy, and his goal put the match beyond Athletic’s reach.
Despite some late pressure from Athletic, including a few near chances, Barcelona held firm and saw out the game. Athletic made multiple substitutions, trying to spark a comeback, but nothing seemed to go their way. In the end, it was Barcelona who came out on top with a well-deserved 2-0 win, thanks to clinical finishing and effective defending.
Barcelona will now look forward to their final clash, while Athletic will have to regroup after a tough defeat. For Barcelona, this victory is a reminder of their ability to perform under pressure and continue to compete for silverware. The final is now within their reach, and they’ll be eager to add another title to their collection.
