Belarus Eyes Economic Expansion with Afghanistan Amid Trade Imbalance
Belarus is seeking to deepen trade ties with Afghanistan, according to a recent meeting between Kazintas Andrei, Belarus’s Deputy Minister of Industry, and Nooruddin Azizi, the Taliban’s Minister of Industry and Commerce. This initiative underscores Belarus's interest in exploring economic opportunities with Afghanistan, aiming to foster bilateral trade through joint exhibitions and forums. While the Belarusian Ministry of Industry has not officially commented, the Taliban’s ministry highlighted the discussions as a step toward addressing Afghanistan’s trade imbalance.
Afghanistan's trade landscape remains challenging. In 2024, the country’s trade volume reached $12.42 billion, marking an increase from the $10.8 billion reported in 2023. However, this growth primarily stemmed from a 38% surge in imports, which significantly outweighed a modest export performance. Exports fell by 4% to $1.803 billion, while imports ballooned to $10.619 billion. This imbalance leaves Afghanistan with an $8.816 billion trade deficit, reflecting a consumption-heavy economy with limited export capabilities.

Economists have expressed concerns about the country’s reliance on imports, warning that it could exacerbate unemployment and poverty. Exports accounted for a mere 15% of total trade, while imports made up a staggering 85%. Despite these challenges, trade with Turkey and India grew substantially, while exports to neighboring nations like Iran, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan doubled, showcasing some regional trade growth. Afghanistan's key exports include agricultural products like pomegranates, raisins, and figs, along with coal and asafoetida.
The Taliban’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce remains optimistic, framing these developments as signs of economic stabilization. The ministry credits reforms and domestic trade support for improving the purchasing power of Afghan citizens. However, analysts caution that the widening trade deficit continues to burden Afghanistan’s fragile economy.
Belarus’s engagement offers potential relief, signaling new opportunities for economic collaboration. If effectively leveraged, these ties could help Afghanistan diversify its trade portfolio and reduce its dependence on imports, fostering a more balanced economic future.
