Brant Boyer Joins 49ers as Special Teams Coordinator
In a significant move to enhance their special teams performance, the San Francisco 49ers, led by head coach Kyle Shanahan, have appointed Brant Boyer as their new special teams coordinator. This announcement marks a fresh chapter for the 49ers, following a season where their special teams struggled, contributing to an underwhelming 6-11 record.
Boyer, 53, brings a wealth of experience to the team. For the past nine seasons, he served as the special teams coordinator for the New York Jets. Under his leadership, the Jets' special teams unit excelled in multiple areas, ranking tied-for-second in total touchdowns (nine), second in blocked punts (eight), and tied-for-fifth in special teams points scored (63). Additionally, his coaching helped limit opponents’ kickoff return averages to an impressive 21.8 yards, a testament to his strategic acumen.

Boyer’s tenure with the Jets saw individual players thrive under his guidance. Wide receivers Braxton Berrios and Andre Roberts earned Associated Press First-Team All-Pro honors as returners in 2022 and 2018, respectively. Meanwhile, notable players like cornerback Justin Hardee, kicker Jason Myers, and Roberts secured Pro Bowl appearances.
Before his success with the Jets, Boyer was an assistant special teams coach with the Indianapolis Colts from 2012 to 2015. During that time, the Colts' special teams consistently ranked in the NFL's top 10 for key metrics like kickoff return yards, net punt yards, and field goal percentage. Boyer’s work with stars such as punter Pat McAfee and kicker Adam Vinatieri further cemented his reputation, as both players earned First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors under his guidance.
Beyond coaching, Boyer boasts a strong playing career as a linebacker and special teams player. A 1994 sixth-round draft pick, he spent 11 seasons in the NFL with the Dolphins, Jaguars, and Browns, amassing 250 tackles, 13 sacks, and six interceptions.
The 49ers are confident Boyer’s expertise and experience will revitalize their special teams unit, underscoring Shanahan's commitment to improving every facet of the team. Fans will eagerly await the impact of Boyer’s leadership in the upcoming season.
