Cameron Diaz Calls Her 10-Year Retirement "The Best Years of My Life"

Cameron Diaz, renowned for her roles in iconic films like The Holiday and Charlie's Angels , recently reflected on her decade-long hiatus from acting, calling it "the best 10 years" of her life. The 52-year-old actress made her return to the big screen in Back in Action , a Netflix action-comedy alongside her longtime collaborator, Jamie Foxx. But, as she shared during her appearance on The Graham Norton Show , she's uncertain if this marks a permanent return to Hollywood. "This is maybe the beginning... I don’t know," she said, hinting at the possibility of more acting projects ahead, but not committing to anything just yet.

For Diaz, stepping away from the spotlight in 2014 after her role in the Annie remake was a liberating experience. She embraced the time away from acting, especially relishing the opportunity to be fully present as a wife and mother. "I loved it. I was just free to be 'I'm a mom, I'm a wife, I'm living my life.' It was so lovely," she said. Diaz was able to focus on her family and live without the constant pressure of the public eye. She added that it was "so lovely" to simply experience life without the demands of Hollywood. For a decade, she turned down roles, even when offers came in, and eventually, people stopped asking.

Her return to acting, however, came about for very personal reasons. She mentioned that when she and her husband, musician Benji Madden, received the script for Back in Action , they realized that "maybe it’s time to switch it up for the family a little bit." Diaz added that it would take someone special to convince her to leave her family for long hours, and Foxx, with whom she shared great chemistry in Annie , was that person. "If I'm going to leave my family for 10 hours a day, I want to do it with the most talented man in entertainment," she said.

In Back in Action , Diaz and Foxx play a married couple and former spies who are forced to return to the world of espionage after their cover is blown. The film, which also explores the dynamics of their family life, marks a fun and lighthearted return for Diaz, blending action and comedy. Despite the decade-long gap, she effortlessly slips back into her action-comedy roots, a genre she became known for in Charlie's Angels and Knight and Day . She said she views acting as a privilege now and feels grateful for the opportunity to return, especially after building a career that allowed her to bring joy to people through her films.

Reflecting on her time away, Diaz acknowledged that her hiatus made her appreciate acting even more. "I thought to myself, if I just let this go away, all of this goodwill that I got to build over so much time... if I don’t engage again, then I would be a fool," she said. She described the chance to entertain again as something too precious to ignore. As for the future, Diaz remains uncertain but open to possibilities. "Maybe I’ll tiptoe in, maybe I’ll go gung-ho—I don’t know," she added, leaving fans curious about what lies ahead.

After welcoming her second child in 2024, Diaz seems to be embracing a more balanced life, one where family and career can coexist. Her return to acting, though a significant shift after such a long break, feels like a natural next step—especially when working with someone as talented as Jamie Foxx. Whether this is just a one-time comeback or the beginning of a new chapter in her career, Diaz's fans are thrilled to see her back in action.
