Charlotte FC Set to Secure Deal for Miguel Almirón’s MLS Return Amid Transfer Buzz

Miguel Almirón’s future at Newcastle United is currently under the spotlight, as Charlotte FC appears to be closing in on a deal to bring the Paraguayan winger back to Major League Soccer (MLS). Almirón, 30, has made 219 appearances for Newcastle since his £21m move from Atlanta United in 2019, but his time at the Premier League club has been marked by mixed fortunes. While he was once a regular starter, this season has seen him struggle for game time, with only three starts in the league. In fact, he has featured primarily as a substitute, which has fueled speculation regarding his potential departure.

Charlotte FC, who showed interest in Almirón during the summer transfer window, are once again linked with the Paraguayan international. The MLS side’s assistant manager, Christian Fuchs, confirmed the club’s pursuit of Almirón but emphasized that no deal has been finalized yet. Fuchs, a Premier League title winner with Leicester City in 2016, stated, “There are always a lot of names being associated with Charlotte FC, and once it’s signed, Almirón will be a great addition to our club.”

Almirón’s desire to return to MLS seems to align with Charlotte FC’s ambitions to further strengthen their squad. The winger spent three successful years with Atlanta United before making the move to England, and a return to the States could offer him a fresh start. However, Almirón’s financial demands could complicate the potential move, with reports suggesting that Charlotte has yet to meet the player's asking price.

While Charlotte FC is his most likely destination in MLS, Almirón has also attracted interest from Europe and South America, with Brazilian clubs Santos and Botafogo reportedly keeping an eye on him. Additionally, Olympiakos in Greece has shown interest in securing his services. Despite the growing interest from various clubs, Almirón has made it clear that he is not in a hurry to leave Newcastle. He is reportedly not desperate to move, which could mean that his departure may not come to fruition unless an offer that satisfies him materializes.

Newcastle United’s need to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules adds another layer of complexity to the situation. The club is looking to raise funds through player sales, which might create the financial flexibility they need to strengthen their squad. Selling Almirón could be part of that plan, although the club’s manager, Eddie Howe, has suggested that they are unlikely to be busy in the winter transfer window and may opt to delay further acquisitions until the summer.

If a deal does go through, Almirón’s departure would mark the end of a chapter at Newcastle. The club's willingness to offload the winger will depend largely on whether they can strike an agreement that meets both parties' financial demands. For now, fans will have to wait and see whether Almirón will make his long-anticipated return to MLS or remain in Europe, where his next move remains uncertain.
