In a heartwarming revelation from Jim O’Heir’s book, Welcome to Pawnee: Stories of Friendship, Waffles, and Parks and Recreation , Chris Pratt shared an emotional behind-the-scenes story from his time on the beloved NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation . Known for his lovable and goofy character, Andy Dwyer, Pratt took a stand against certain jokes on set, especially those aimed at O’Heir’s character, Jerry Gergich.
O’Heir, who portrayed the perpetually mocked Jerry, recounts how Pratt’s genuine concern made a lasting impact. “I remember you saying, ‘Jimmy, are you okay with these?’” O’Heir recalls in the book, emphasizing how Pratt often checked in to ensure the humor wasn’t crossing a line. While Jerry was a central source of comedic fodder throughout the show, Pratt felt some jokes veered into mean-spirited territory, overshadowing the humor.
Pratt himself reflected on his intentions: “I care about you, and I love you,” he said, acknowledging that not all jokes landed the way they were intended. “If it’s a joke, it’s funny. But if it’s mean for the sake of being mean, I’m not a fan of that.” He recalled a specific instance involving a printer gag that left a sour taste. When the joke suggested “Jerry sucks” in a particularly blunt way, Pratt stepped in and voiced his discomfort. “I just said, ‘I don’t think that’s funny. I don’t know about it.’”
For O’Heir, Pratt’s actions were deeply meaningful. While the actor didn’t take the jokes personally, he was touched by the kindness shown by his co-star. “You checked in on me,” O’Heir told Pratt. “That meant the world to me. You have the biggest heart.”
This candid moment offers fans of Parks and Recreation a glimpse into the thoughtful camaraderie behind the scenes. Beyond the laughs and hijinks, it’s clear the cast shared a bond rooted in respect and care. Pratt’s stance against crossing comedic boundaries reflects his commitment to kindness, both on-screen and off, and reinforces why he remains one of Hollywood’s most beloved stars.
