Connor Zary Suffers Knee Injury After Brutal Hit in Flames' Victory
Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary suffered a concerning injury during his team’s recent match against the Anaheim Ducks. The injury occurred early in the second period when Zary, at 23 years old, was caught in a knee-on-knee collision with Ducks defenceman Drew Helleson. At the time of the hit, Zary was making a move toward the center of the ice, with the puck under control. Unfortunately, Helleson’s left knee made contact with Zary's knee, sending him to the ice in a painful manner.
Immediately after the hit, Zary was seen grabbing his injured leg, signaling clear distress. As play continued, he remained down for an extended period, requiring assistance to leave the ice. The physical toll of the collision was apparent, and it was soon confirmed that Zary would not return to the game. In terms of the game’s outcome, the Flames did manage to secure a 3-2 overtime victory against the Ducks. Despite the injury setback, Calgary pushed forward and capitalized on their opportunities. Zary had been contributing well to the team, with one blocked shot and one hit in just 6:37 of ice time before the injury halted his night. Prior to this game, he had already racked up an impressive 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points across 40 games.
In response to the hit, Helleson was given a five-minute major penalty for interference and a game misconduct, which showed the severity of the play in the eyes of the officials.
