Dolphins Make Coaching Changes, Part Ways with Wes Welker and Danny Crossman
The Miami Dolphins have made significant changes to their coaching staff after the 2024 season. The team announced that they have fired both their wide receivers coach, Wes Welker, and special teams coordinator, Danny Crossman. These moves come as part of the Dolphins’ effort to retool their coaching lineup after a disappointing season that ended with a record of 8-9. Head coach Mike McDaniel addressed the changes, expressing his gratitude to both coaches for their dedication to the team.
McDaniel spoke highly of Crossman’s long tenure with the Dolphins, having served as the special teams coordinator since 2019. During his time with the team, Crossman contributed to a number of successes in special teams and helped build a solid foundation for the unit. He had previously held similar roles with the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, and Carolina Panthers before coming to Miami. McDaniel acknowledged the critical role Crossman played throughout his years with the Dolphins, but emphasized the need for a shift as the team aims for improvement.

Wes Welker, who was hired in 2022 under McDaniel’s leadership, has also seen his tenure with the Dolphins come to an end. As a former star wide receiver for the Dolphins, Welker transitioned into coaching and was instrumental in the development of the team’s passing game. Under his guidance, Miami’s offense became more dynamic, but Welker’s departure signals that the franchise is looking for fresh perspectives and strategies moving forward. Before joining the Dolphins, Welker had served as the San Francisco 49ers' wide receivers coach and was a key offensive assistant with the Houston Texans.
Both firings come on the heels of an underperforming season for the Dolphins, where they failed to meet the high expectations set at the beginning of the year. The Dolphins ended the 2024 campaign with a disappointing 8-9 record and missed the playoffs for the first time under McDaniel's tenure. General manager Chris Grier called the outcome of the season "unacceptable," and it is clear that the team is hoping to make major adjustments to return to playoff contention.
In his statement, McDaniel emphasized that these decisions were not made lightly. “This was not a decision I came to lightly,” McDaniel explained. “But as I have evaluated the season and areas where we must improve, I believe that change is needed and am motivated to do what is best for the team as we move forward.” With both Crossman and Welker out, the Dolphins are now looking for new coaching talent to help the team bounce back and become more competitive in the 2025 season.
As the Dolphins reorganize their coaching staff, the focus now shifts to finding new leaders who can address the team’s weaknesses and help them reach their potential. This shake-up is part of a larger effort to overhaul areas of the team that didn't perform as expected, with the goal of fostering growth and success for years to come. While change is never easy, it’s clear that the Dolphins are committed to taking the necessary steps to get back to the level of success their fans expect.
