Emergency Landing of United Airlines Flight Leaves Six Injured
United Airlines Flight 613, carrying 245 passengers and 11 crew members, encountered a sudden and alarming incident early Friday morning, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency return to Lagos, Nigeria. The unexpected event, which caused an abrupt movement mid-flight, resulted in minor injuries to four passengers and two crew members. All six individuals were promptly taken to a local hospital for evaluation and have since been discharged.
The flight, operated by a Boeing 787 and en route to Washington D.C., faced a technical issue that United Airlines has described as “unexpected aircraft movement.” Though the cause remains under investigation, it has been confirmed that the incident was not due to severe turbulence, a factor commonly associated with mid-air disturbances. United Airlines is collaborating with aviation authorities in the U.S. and Nigeria to determine the precise reason behind the event.

This incident draws parallels to a similar case in March 2024 when another Boeing 787 experienced a sharp movement mid-flight. Investigations into that event revealed an accidental activation of a pilot’s seat switch, which affected the aircraft’s controls. Whether the current case involves a comparable technical issue or an entirely different factor remains unclear.
United Airlines has assured passengers of their commitment to safety and is arranging alternative flights for those affected. In the meantime, the airline has also accommodated passengers in nearby hotels while they resolve the situation.
