Erika Hilton Receives Death Threats After Exposing Fake News on Pix
In a shocking turn of events, Brazilian congresswoman Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP) has become the target of death threats after sharing a video debunking fake news regarding government measures on the Pix system. The threats, made by far-right accounts on social media, have prompted Hilton to seek protection from the Federal Police. On January 19, 2025, Hilton filed an official request to open an inquiry into the threats, which include vile suggestions that the congresswoman should be assassinated.
Hilton's video, which addresses the recent controversy surrounding the Pix payment system, quickly gained traction online. As of now, it has garnered millions of views, reflecting the intense public interest in the topic. The video criticizes the misinformation spread by right-wing figures, particularly about the government's stance on taxing Pix transactions. Hilton vehemently rejected claims that the Pix system was being taxed, emphasizing that the government under President Lula has never supported such a measure. Instead, she condemned the far-right figures for spreading lies and manipulating the public, hoping to create a false narrative.

However, the congresswoman’s exposure of these false claims has led to a wave of violent backlash. One particular threat suggested that hitmen should be hired to deal with Hilton, referring to a notorious criminal figure. Hilton's team has reported several instances of transphobic comments targeting the congresswoman as well. Despite the threats, Hilton remains resolute in her commitment to truth and democracy, stating that she will not be intimidated or silenced by those who resort to violence to suppress opposing viewpoints.
The video, published on Instagram, was part of a broader effort to clarify the government's position on Pix. It aimed to counteract a viral post from right-wing lawmaker Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG), who had earlier claimed that the government was planning to impose a tax on Pix. Hilton responded to this misinformation, arguing that Ferreira and his allies were manipulating public perception. According to Hilton, the government had issued a new decree reaffirming that Pix transactions would not be taxed.
Hilton has been no stranger to attacks of this nature. In October 2024, the Supreme Federal Court (STF) reopened an investigation into transphobic attacks against her. She has also taken legal action against Nikolas Ferreira for spreading discriminatory remarks. Despite the mounting pressure and threats, Hilton has made it clear that she will continue fighting against the spread of fake news and the dangerous rhetoric of the far-right.
While the public discourse surrounding Pix has stirred considerable debate, it is the personal attacks against Hilton that highlight the growing animosity and violence directed towards political figures challenging the status quo. Hilton’s case is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by public officials, particularly those advocating for marginalized communities, as they push back against misinformation and extremism. However, as Hilton herself declared, she will not back down. “I will continue to fight for the truth, for democracy, and for the safety of our public debate,” she affirmed.
