Former Child Star Rory Sykes Tragically Dies in LA Wildfires

The news of the tragic passing of Rory Sykes, a former child star, has stunned many. The 32-year-old, who had gained recognition in the 1990s for his role on the British TV show Kiddy Kapers , lost his life in the devastating Malibu wildfires that ravaged parts of Los Angeles. His mother, Shelley Sykes, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing the deep pain of losing her son in such a tragic and preventable manner.

Rory, who was blind and had cerebral palsy, lived in a self-contained cottage near his mother’s property. As the fires quickly surrounded the area, Shelley desperately tried to reach emergency services to save her son, but her attempts were met with frustration. According to Shelley, all phone lines were down, and she was unable to get through to 911. In her own words, she said, “Guess what didn’t work, 911.” In a state of panic, she drove to the nearby fire station to seek help, only to be told that they had “no water” to fight the flames.

Shelley recalled the heart-wrenching moment she spoke with her son as the fire closed in. “He said 'Mum, leave me,' and no mum can leave their kid,” she shared. “And I’ve got a broken arm. I couldn’t lift him. I couldn’t move him.” When she returned with the fire department’s help, it was too late. Rory’s cottage had been consumed by the flames, and he had tragically perished, reportedly from carbon monoxide poisoning. Shelley’s words echoed the sorrow that so many parents can relate to: “He was my baby, and he died needlessly.”

The loss of Rory is a heart-shattering reminder of the uncontrollable nature of wildfires and the limitations of emergency services when disaster strikes. While the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District denied Shelley’s claims about the lack of water, the reality of her devastating experience is undeniable. Shelley’s grief is compounded by the sense of helplessness she felt in her final moments with Rory, and the profound sense of loss for a son who, despite all odds, was still her little boy in her eyes.

As the community comes to terms with the tragedy, Shelley’s story has brought to light the harsh realities of the wildfires that have claimed so many lives and livelihoods. In the face of such an overwhelming disaster, it is clear that even the most determined efforts to save loved ones may fall short.
