Frenkie de Jong Opens Up About Barcelona Future and His Contract Situation
Frenkie de Jong, the talented FC Barcelona midfielder, has recently addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his contract renewal and the possibility of leaving the club. Speaking in an interview with Voetbal International , the Dutch international discussed his situation in detail, revealing his thoughts on his future with the Catalan giants.
De Jong’s current contract with Barcelona was initially signed in 2019 and was extended during the pandemic, with an expiration date set for June 30, 2026. As the 2025 season approaches, Barcelona has been in discussions with De Jong over a new contract, but reports suggest that the negotiations have stalled. There have even been rumors suggesting that De Jong might be trying to run down his contract in order to leave the club for free. These reports have stirred considerable attention, but De Jong has played down such claims.

In his interview, De Jong made it clear that the speculation surrounding his contract is more of an issue for the media than for him personally. "I want to play football and then I'll see what the club wants to do with me and then I'll decide what I want to do, together with my agent and my family," he explained. His commitment to Barcelona remains strong, but he did note that if he ever felt that he couldn't contribute enough to the team or if the team couldn’t compete at the highest level, he would consider moving on.
Reflecting on his time at Barcelona, De Jong admitted that his trophy collection has not been as extensive as he had hoped when he first joined the club. “When I signed for Barcelona, I didn’t imagine that I would win only one league, a Copa del Rey, and a Spanish Super Cup after four years,” he said, acknowledging his disappointment over the club's recent struggles. Despite these setbacks, De Jong remains fully committed to his football career and is determined to push through these challenges.
In addition to contract discussions, De Jong also opened up about the difficult period he endured following an ankle injury sustained in April 2024. The injury kept him sidelined until October, and he described it as the most challenging time of his career. He shared that, at first, his thoughts were consumed with worrying about the injury and how it would affect his ability to play. Though his ankle is no longer a daily concern, De Jong admitted that it still requires extra attention and care.
Regarding rumors about his potential move to Saudi Arabia, De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, quickly dismissed these speculations as "absurd," stating that there are no plans for the midfielder to move to the Middle East. Dursun also emphasized that De Jong's main priority is to stay fit and continue contributing to Barcelona, where he feels at home.
Despite the ongoing discussions and rumors surrounding his future, De Jong's focus remains on his current goals – staying fit, playing well, and continuing to be a key part of Barcelona’s midfield. While his contract situation still needs resolution, both De Jong and the club seem to be open to continuing their partnership for the foreseeable future.
