Heavy Snow Disrupts Devon Schools as More Closures Are Announced
The recent snowfall in Devon has led to significant disruptions, with several schools closing their doors due to safety concerns. The weather, which has brought heavy snow across the county, has prompted the Met Office to issue a yellow warning for snow and ice, urging people to exercise caution while traveling.
On January 8, Stansfield Academy, located on the outskirts of Exeter, and Hennock Community Primary School near Bovey Tracey, were the first to announce closures. The decision was made as the heavy snow forecasted for the day posed a risk to staff and student travel. Stansfield Academy cited safety concerns for both staff and students, as roads and pathways became hazardous. Hennock Community Primary School also opted to close its doors in anticipation of worsening weather conditions.

As the snow continued to fall, five additional schools followed suit, announcing their plans to either close or delay their openings the next day. Moretonhampstead Primary School, Ilsington Church of England Primary School, Christow Primary School, and The Promise School were fully closed. Princetown Community Primary School, however, stated that it would open later at 10am, although the situation remained under review, and a full closure could be implemented if conditions did not improve.
The disruption didn’t end there. On January 9, Devon County Council shared an updated list of closures, revealing that Hennock Community Primary School, Moretonhampstead Primary School, Ilsington Church of England Primary School, Christow Primary School, and The Promise School would remain closed. Several other schools, including Chudleigh Church of England Community Primary School and Newton Abbot College, reported delayed openings, with schools opening between 9:30am and 10:30am to ensure that staff and students could travel safely.
Schools across Devon have been closely monitoring the weather, adjusting schedules as necessary to keep everyone safe. With the ongoing disruption expected to affect roads and transportation, the authorities are urging parents to stay updated on any changes to school opening times. The forecast warns of further disruption, with icy roads and slippery conditions likely to cause accidents and delays. Snow and ice are forecasted to continue through the day, potentially complicating travel plans for families across the county.
As the snowstorm rages on, the community remains on alert. Parents are being reminded to check with local authorities for the latest information, and all school transport services are subject to change based on weather conditions. In light of the adverse weather, online learning platforms have been set up for students to continue their education remotely where possible.
Devon residents are advised to stay indoors where they can and travel only if absolutely necessary, as the risk of accidents and further disruptions remains high. The authorities have assured the public that they are working hard to clear the roads and ensure safe travel for those who need to be on the move.
