Honoring MLK Day: What's Open and Closed on January 20, 2025
As we mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 20, 2025, we celebrate not just the life of a civil rights icon but also his enduring legacy of equality and justice. This federal holiday also serves as a National Day of Service, encouraging all Americans to engage in volunteerism to uplift their communities. Interestingly, this year’s MLK Day coincides with the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, but the closures and observances primarily revolve around honoring Dr. King’s contributions.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday is January 15, but the holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year. This tradition was born out of decades of advocacy. Just days after Dr. King’s assassination in 1968, Representative John Conyers introduced legislation to create a federal holiday in his honor. However, it wasn’t until 1983 that President Ronald Reagan signed it into law, with the first celebration held in 1986. By 1999, New Hampshire became the final state to formally recognize MLK Day.

On this day, many businesses and services adjust their schedules. Major retailers and grocers like Target, Walmart, and Costco will operate as usual, offering convenience for shoppers. Many restaurants will remain open, though checking local hours is advisable. For shipping services, USPS will halt mail delivery, and most UPS services will pause, except for critical services. FedEx will maintain modified operations, with certain locations open.
Financial services, including major banks and the stock market, will close for the day. However, online banking and ATMs will remain accessible. Government offices such as DMVs and libraries will also close, though National Parks will offer free admission as part of the day’s celebrations.
As we observe MLK Day, it’s a time for reflection, community engagement, and a reminder of Dr. King’s timeless message of unity and equality. Whether volunteering, spending time with loved ones, or simply pausing to reflect, this day is a tribute to a man who transformed the course of American history.
