The match started with promise for Sinner, who claimed the first set 6-3. However, Rune fought back, leveraging his precision and stamina to even the score by taking the second set 6-3. As Sinner's physical condition worsened, his hands visibly trembled during changeovers, and he required a medical timeout to recover. After receiving medication and taking some time off court, Sinner returned rejuvenated, breaking Rune's serve and clinching the third set 6-3.
Rune, who had already endured two grueling five-setters earlier in the tournament, also struggled under the punishing conditions. His ongoing knee issues forced him to call for medical assistance during the match. A temporary disruption occurred in the fourth set when the net required repairs, giving both players a brief respite. Sinner described the break as “very helpful,” and it appeared to shift momentum in his favor. He powered through the final set, finishing with a decisive 6-2 scoreline.
After over three hours of grueling tennis, Sinner emerged victorious, emphasizing his focus on recovery ahead of the quarterfinals. He will face Australian Alex de Minaur, who reached his first quarterfinal after defeating Alex Michelsen.
This victory highlights Sinner's tenacity and ability to perform under pressure, solidifying his reputation as one of the sport’s rising stars. While the physical challenges were evident, Sinner’s mental fortitude and adaptability shone through, keeping his championship hopes alive.
