Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm Shop Temporarily Shuts Amid Pub Challenges
Jeremy Clarkson, renowned TV host and former Top Gear star, has announced the temporary closure of his famous Diddly Squat Farm Shop. The shop, located in Chadlington, will remain closed throughout January and February, reopening on March 1. The decision follows a challenging period for Clarkson, who has also faced setbacks with his pub venture, The Farmer’s Dog .

The announcement was made on the shop’s official website, informing customers of the closure and directing them to a pop-up shop at The Farmer’s Dog , operating Wednesday to Sunday. While Clarkson has not provided a specific reason for this break, the timing aligns with other recent difficulties, including damage to the pub’s Grand Tour tent caused by Storm Darragh.
Clarkson took over The Farmer’s Dog last August, hoping to blend his passion for local produce and traditional British hospitality. However, the venture has proven to be anything but straightforward. In a recent column for The Times , he candidly shared the unexpected challenges, from plumbing disasters requiring hazmat specialists to persistent theft of branded glassware.
Despite steady patronage, the pub struggles to turn a profit. Clarkson revealed staggering expenses, including £27,000 monthly costs for parking and traffic marshals, and substantial heating and generator fuel bills. He also expressed frustration over customers pilfering pint glasses, a problem so rampant that he introduced cheeky beer mats warning, “Jeremy is watching. Don’t steal his pint glasses.”
Adding to his woes, Clarkson lamented that profitability has been elusive despite high customer traffic. He described the venture as a “total disaster,” noting that while customers love the pub’s cozy ambiance and robust menu, the financial strain has been overwhelming.
Yet, amidst the turmoil, there have been bright spots. Celebrity chef Marco Pierre White praised the pub’s menu, and Clarkson remains proud of the traditional pub experience he offers. However, he candidly admits that the stress of running both the farm shop and pub has taken its toll, leaving him financially drained and grappling with relentless challenges.
