Justice for Kiena Dawes: A Tragic Story of Abuse and Accountability

Today, we reflect on the harrowing story of Kiena Dawes , a young mother whose life was tragically cut short following a prolonged period of domestic abuse. Her case, marked by devastating revelations and courtroom drama, has captured widespread attention, shedding light on the grim realities of intimate partner violence.

Kiena, a 23-year-old hairdresser from Fleetwood, Lancashire, was described by those who knew her as "bright, popular, and universally loved." She appeared to have a promising future, yet her life took a heartbreaking turn when she met Ryan Wellings , a 30-year-old landscape gardener. Their relationship began like a fairytale, with grand gestures and rapid declarations of love, but quickly spiraled into a nightmare of control, violence, and manipulation.

Throughout their two-and-a-half-year relationship, Wellings subjected Kiena to unrelenting abuse. This included physical assaults, threats of unimaginable violence, and psychological torment. The court heard chilling accounts of Wellings’ threats to disfigure her with acid, his attempts to strangle her, and frequent demeaning comments. He drained her finances, undermined her self-esteem, and isolated her from her support network, all while continuing to evade accountability for his actions.

Kiena’s suffering culminated on July 22, 2022 , when she tragically took her own life. In a haunting note left on her phone, she wrote, "I was murdered... Ryan Wellings killed me." Her words, a poignant call for justice, underscored the depth of her despair and the immense toll of her abuse.

While Wellings was cleared of manslaughter charges in court, he was convicted of assault and coercive and controlling behavior—a verdict that, while significant, has left her family yearning for more accountability. Speaking outside the courtroom, Kiena’s mother expressed the pain of her loss, describing her daughter as a "rare gem" and vowing to advocate for change to prevent others from enduring similar tragedies.

This case also raises critical questions about systemic failures. Despite multiple calls to law enforcement and visible signs of violence, Kiena was let down by a system that failed to protect her. Three officers from Lancashire Police now face disciplinary action for their handling of her case.

Kiena’s story is a sobering reminder of the pervasive nature of domestic violence and the need for society to take decisive action against it. Her courage in documenting her pain and holding her abuser accountable serves as an enduring call for change. As we mourn her loss, we must also commit to creating a world where stories like hers become a thing of the past.
