Major Outages Disrupt Three Network Across UK, Affecting Thousands
Recently, a significant disruption has hit the Three network in the UK, leaving thousands of customers unable to make or receive phone calls. The issue, which has affected not only Three's direct customers but also users of smaller mobile providers like Smarty and iD Mobile (who rely on Three's infrastructure), has been causing widespread frustration. The first signs of trouble emerged around 1 PM on January 23, 2025, and by the evening, more than 10,000 reports of issues had flooded Downdetector, a website that tracks outages.
Many customers quickly took to social media to voice their concerns, with some users expressing serious frustrations about missed calls, such as one person who shared they were unable to receive calls about a medical appointment, while another reported that their daughter had been stranded due to the issue. The network outage has caused disruptions in multiple areas, including regions like Yorkshire, Derbyshire, North Lanarkshire, and London. People vented their frustrations online, with one user even sharing the emotional toll, stating they couldn't make calls to arrange a funeral.

Three’s support team responded, acknowledging the problem and assuring customers that efforts were underway to resolve it. However, they couldn’t provide a specific timeframe for a fix. They stated, “We’re working hard to resolve this as soon as possible,” and confirmed that data services and emergency 999 calls were unaffected. Despite this, some customers expressed concerns about the broader impact, wondering whether emergency services might be compromised or if they could claim compensation for the outages.
In a later update, iD Mobile echoed Three’s message, apologizing for the inconvenience and stating that their engineers had pinpointed and isolated the issue. The lack of a clear timeline for a resolution left many feeling uncertain about when they could expect service to return to normal.
This disruption comes at a time when Three is preparing to finalize its £16.5 billion merger with Vodafone, which was approved just last month. While the merger promises future improvements, it remains to be seen whether these outages will have any effect on the upcoming integration process. Many are hopeful that the merger will result in better service and infrastructure, but for now, Three customers are left grappling with the immediate inconvenience caused by this major disruption. As of now, over 5,000 customers are still reporting issues, leaving the company to continue its efforts to restore full service.
