Man Utd Accelerates Move for Patrick Dorgu as Liverpool Eyes Superior Left-back Option
Manchester United is speeding up its pursuit of Patrick Dorgu, the Danish left-back currently playing for Lecce, after the 20-year-old reportedly gave his consent for the move. With a deal increasingly taking shape, United looks to secure the young talent as an alternative to more expensive targets. Dorgu, who can play multiple roles but is expected to be utilized as a left-wing back, is a cheaper option compared to other high-profile players like Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and Nuno Mendes from Paris Saint-Germain.
The interest from Manchester United comes after a long search for a reliable left-back following the team's struggles to fill that position. Their current formation, led by Ruben Amorim, relies heavily on wing-backs, and United has been missing a specialized player for that role. Despite some improvement in recent performances, Luke Shaw's injury woes have left the club in dire need of reinforcements, especially after Tyrell Malacia's possible departure. United’s defense has not been up to par, as evidenced by their recent losses, including a 3-1 defeat to Brighton, which leaves them sitting 13th in the Premier League standings.

As for Dorgu, his recent performances in Serie A have earned him significant attention from top clubs across Europe. Dorgu, who began his career at FC Nordsjaelland before moving to Lecce, is considered a talented and versatile player with a bright future ahead. He has already earned four senior international caps for Denmark, further adding to his credentials. United’s scouts have reportedly been keeping a close eye on him, and the player himself is eager to make the jump to Old Trafford. Reports suggest that the fee for Dorgu would be around €40 million (£33.8 million), a price that is far more affordable than the €50 million-plus options like Kerkez.
However, Dorgu’s move to United does come with some implications for Liverpool. The Reds, who have been in the market for a left-back to eventually replace the aging Andy Robertson, now have a clear path to sign Kerkez. Liverpool was already hesitant to make a move this January, preferring to wait for the summer transfer window to address their left-back needs. With United shifting its focus to Dorgu, Liverpool is free to target Kerkez without facing direct competition from their Premier League rivals.
Bournemouth is reportedly asking for at least £40 million for Kerkez, and if his excellent form continues, the price tag could rise. Liverpool's ability to secure the highly rated defender could hinge on how well Kerkez continues to perform during the remainder of the season, and United's decision to focus on Dorgu could turn out to be a strategic benefit for Jurgen Klopp's team.
As for Manchester United, a move for Dorgu would mark their first major signing of the January transfer window, which has otherwise been quiet for the club. With Antony reportedly nearing an exit to Real Betis, the club looks set to finalize Dorgu’s deal soon, bolstering their defense and potentially securing a key player for their future campaigns.
