Montreal's Frank Baylis Eyes Leadership of the Liberal Party
Frank Baylis, a former Member of Parliament and successful businessman, has made a bold move by announcing his intention to run for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada. Baylis, a Montreal native, has been eyeing this position for some time, with reports indicating that he began considering a leadership bid as early as last summer. His decision follows the Liberal Party's loss in the Toronto-St. Paul's byelection last June, a defeat that led him to believe that change was needed within the party.
Baylis has a long history of entrepreneurship, with an educational background in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo. He co-managed Baylis Medical Technologies, a company founded by his mother, Gloria Baylis, a civil rights activist and registered nurse originally from Barbados. His father, Richard Baylis, immigrated to Montreal from the UK. In 2022, Baylis Medical Technologies was sold to an American company for an impressive $1.75 billion. Following the sale, Baylis continued to serve as the executive chairman of the company’s board of directors.

His political career began in 2015 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Montreal’s Pierrefonds-Dollard, a position he held until 2019, when he chose not to seek re-election.
