It's a moment that many dream of, and for two young talents, it has now become a reality. Xu Haolun and Tan Xiangwen, both born in the post-2000s generation, made their debut on the prestigious CCTV Spring Festival Gala stage during the Chinese New Year's Eve of the Year of the Snake. This momentous occasion saw the duo perform their piece titled "Fake and Fraud No More" for eight minutes, a performance that blends sharp wit and relatable humor with a unique approach. For the two young comedians, it felt like stepping into a dream.

Having grown up watching the Spring Festival Gala every year, Xu and Tan were amazed by the grandeur of the stage. "It’s such a huge stage, it felt unreal," they exclaimed, with awe in their voices. Their excitement was shared with family members, who have long been viewers of this iconic television event. For them, being part of the show was like a dream come true. Their journey to this stage began back in October 2024 when they won the championship on Talk Show and Friends . In November, they received the invitation to perform at the Spring Festival Gala, an opportunity they approached with both excitement and nerves.

When preparing for their first-ever performance at the gala, the duo worked hard to craft the best piece possible. Initially, they prepared a different script, but after the first rehearsal, they switched to their current piece. They meticulously fine-tuned every detail, adjusting small things like punctuation and sentence breaks, as well as bigger aspects like rhythm and timing. "It was all about keeping the humor relatable and real," said Xu Haolun. Their determination paid off as they perfected their act, which addressed issues that every person can relate to, such as the deceit and fake appearances that are often seen in everyday life.

Despite their initial nerves, Xu and Tan focused on supporting each other. "We have each other to lean on," they said. "Once we're on stage, the tension fades, and we can just focus on delivering the performance." Their chemistry as partners was evident, and this mutual support helped them overcome any nervousness. The duo also shared amusing anecdotes from the rehearsal process. Xu Haolun, for example, admitted to nervously nibbling his fingers during stressful moments, prompting Tan to remind him not to do so because it didn’t look good on camera!

One of the most eye-opening experiences for them was encountering so many legendary figures from the world of entertainment, some of whom they had only seen on television before. This surreal moment of being surrounded by icons gave them a newfound sense of respect and admiration for the industry.

Their performance at the Spring Festival Gala stands out for its departure from traditional comedic forms, such as traditional cross-talk or skits. Xu and Tan firmly believe that there is no significant gap between southern and northern comedy, nor between traditional and new forms of humor. "Good comedy comes from the people, and it has the power to resonate with everyone," they said. The two also emphasized that it’s not about the specific format, whether it’s a dumpling or a rice ball, but about making the audience laugh. Their style of comedy is deeply rooted in their childhood experiences, shaped by the work of great comedians like Zhao Lirong, whose down-to-earth performances left a lasting impression on them.

Reflecting on their Spring Festival Gala debut, Xu Haolun and Tan Xiangwen expressed gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging that not every actor gets a chance like this. "We never expected that we'd be standing here today," they admitted. Their incredible journey from their hometown in Changsha to performing on the Spring Festival Gala stage is a testament to their hard work, talent, and dedication to their craft. As they continue their careers, they aim to bring even more exciting performances to audiences around the world, starting with their ongoing live shows.

For Xu and Tan, this is only the beginning. With their eyes set on future achievements, they are determined to keep pushing the boundaries of comedy and bring joy to their ever-growing fan base.
