Nicola Sturgeon and Peter Murrell Announce Divorce, Ending 15-Year Marriage
Former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and her husband, Peter Murrell, have officially announced the end of their 15-year marriage. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Sturgeon revealed that the couple had been separated for some time and felt it was appropriate to make the situation public. Both emphasized their continued care for one another, stating they would not provide further comments.
The couple, once seen as Scotland's political power duo, faced growing public scrutiny in recent years. Murrell, the former SNP Chief Executive, was arrested in April 2023 on charges of embezzling party funds as part of the ongoing "Operation Branchform" investigation into SNP finances. Sturgeon, though also arrested during the inquiry, was released without charge and maintains her innocence. The police investigation, which has spanned over two years, centers on the handling of £600,000 in donations intended for independence campaigning.

Sturgeon’s decision to step down as First Minister and SNP leader in February 2023 marked a turning point in her political career. Murrell, too, resigned from his longstanding position in March 2023, taking responsibility for miscommunications about party membership figures during a leadership transition.
Having first met at an SNP youth event in 1988, Sturgeon and Murrell began their relationship in 2003, marrying in Glasgow in 2010. Their union was often a topic of public debate, with critics questioning the concentration of political power within one household. Despite the challenges, they were a formidable team, with Sturgeon leading Scotland’s government and Murrell steering the SNP’s operations.
Sturgeon, who has been focused on writing her memoir and engaging in public literary events, reflected recently on the all-consuming nature of her work-life balance. The couple’s separation adds another layer of complexity to their shared legacy, marked by political achievements and controversies.
