Petition for LA Mayor Karen Bass’ Resignation Surpasses 45K Amid Wildfire Backlash
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing mounting criticism as a Change.org petition demanding her resignation gains over 45,000 signatures. The petition, launched by a user identified as “Frustrated Californian,” accuses Bass of “gross mismanagement” during the ongoing wildfire crisis that has devastated Southern California. The fires, which have destroyed over 10,000 homes and forced 180,000 residents to evacuate, have become a defining challenge for her tenure.
Critics point to a $17.6 million budget cut to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) as a major contributor to the city’s struggling wildfire response. LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley publicly criticized the cuts, stating they hindered her department’s ability to effectively combat the fires. “My message is the fire department needs to be properly funded. It’s not,” Crowley emphasized. The department is grappling with doubling call volumes since 2010, despite having fewer stations and firefighters.

Compounding the public’s frustration was Mayor Bass’ absence during the early stages of the crisis. While wildfires ravaged the city, Bass was on a diplomatic trip to Ghana. Upon her return, she defended her leadership, claiming she remained in communication with local officials throughout her trip. However, her explanations have done little to appease critics, including public figures like Elon Musk and actress Sara Foster, who have joined the calls for her resignation.
Residents have also expressed concerns about water shortages and evacuation gridlock, issues exacerbating the already dire situation. Governor Gavin Newsom has launched an investigation into the Department of Water and Power to address these concerns. Meanwhile, the devastation continues, with over 30,000 acres burned and at least 11 fatalities reported.
Mayor Bass has pledged to conduct a comprehensive review of the city’s response once the fires are contained. However, many Angelenos feel that the damage to their trust—and to their city—has already been done. The crisis highlights the urgent need for better funding, preparedness, and leadership to ensure Los Angeles can effectively face future disasters.
