PSV Stuns Liverpool in Thrilling Champions League Clash
Liverpool’s perfect Champions League run has come to an end with a dramatic 3-2 defeat against PSV Eindhoven, but the Reds still finish top of the group. It was a night of surprises at the Philips Stadion, where a much-changed Liverpool side, missing 12 regular starters, put up a fight but ultimately couldn’t stop PSV from making history.
The match started with excitement as Liverpool took the lead through a Cody Gakpo penalty in the 28th minute. It was a special moment for Gakpo, returning to face his former club, but the celebrations were short-lived. PSV responded just seven minutes later with Johan Bakayoko finding the net to level the score.

Liverpool wasn’t done yet. Harvey Elliott restored their lead in the 40th minute, finishing off a rebound to make it 2-1. But PSV wasn’t going down without a fight. Ismael Saibari equalized just before halftime, and in the dying moments of stoppage time, Ricardo Pepi flicked the ball past Kelleher to put PSV ahead 3-2 before the break.
The second half, in contrast to the chaotic first, was less eventful. Liverpool struggled to break down PSV’s defense, and their night got worse when 18-year-old substitute Amara Nallo was shown a straight red card moments after coming onto the pitch.
Despite the loss, Liverpool’s top spot in the group was never in doubt, thanks to results elsewhere. PSV, on the other hand, secured their first-ever win over Liverpool and extended their impressive home unbeaten run to 54 matches. Their victory means they advance to the play-off round, keeping their Champions League hopes alive.
For Liverpool, the focus now shifts back to domestic competitions, with a crucial Premier League fixture against Bournemouth on the horizon. It may not have been the perfect ending to the group stage, but with seven wins out of eight matches, the Reds remain one of the favorites heading into the knockout rounds.
