Québec Brace for a Winter Shift – February Brings Stormy Surprises

Big changes are coming to Québec’s weather this February, and it looks like winter is finally ready to show its true colors. So far, the season has been relatively mild, with only a few isolated heavy snowfalls. But that’s about to change.

For the past few weeks, cold air has been firmly settled over the province, pushing the strongest storm systems southward. However, according to meteorologists, February is set to shake things up. The shifting position of cold air could allow more storms to make their way into Québec, bringing a mix of heavy snow, rain, and even freezing rain, depending on the exact trajectory of these systems.

Réjean Ouimet, a meteorologist, explains that the misalignment of air masses has spared Québec from major storms so far. But this pattern is shifting, and February could be quite different. With Arctic cold settling to the west and warmer air pushing up from the south, Québec is in for an interesting mix. For some regions, this means more frequent snowstorms, with 15 to 25 cm or more of snow at a time becoming the norm. However, for the southern parts of the province, things could be trickier—warmer temperatures might lead to a mix of precipitation, including rain and freezing rain.

So far this winter, most of Québec’s snowfall has come from Alberta clippers—small, fast-moving systems that don’t carry much moisture. But February’s storms are expected to originate from further south, meaning they’ll be loaded with precipitation. These more developed systems could bring full-blown winter storms, making snow-covered roads and travel disruptions more common.

And it’s not just about February. Long-term forecasts suggest that these shifts could extend the winter season. More frequent temperature swings will lead to powerful cold fronts, much like the one on January 27, which brought sudden winds and snow squalls. If this trend continues, Québec might be looking at a winter that stretches well beyond what was initially expected.

For now, the key takeaway is to be prepared. Snowfall is about to become more intense, and temperature swings will keep things unpredictable. Whether it’s deep snow in the north or a messy mix of conditions in the south, one thing is certain—February will be a month to watch when it comes to Québec’s weather.
