REAL ID Deadline Approaches: What Minnesotans Need to Know in 2025

As the deadline for the REAL ID draws near, it’s essential to be prepared for changes that could affect how you travel and access federal buildings. Starting May 7, 2025, a standard driver’s license will no longer suffice for air travel or entering federal facilities in the United States. Instead, you'll need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, a passport, or another approved form of identification.

So, what exactly is a REAL ID? It’s a more secure form of identification, created by the U.S. Congress in 2005 as part of a post-9/11 initiative to enhance national security. The REAL ID Act set standards for state-issued IDs across all 50 states, aiming to make it more difficult for individuals to use fraudulent identities. However, due to a series of delays, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the deadline for compliance has been pushed back multiple times.

Now, after almost two decades of waiting, the REAL ID requirement is finally coming into effect. Starting in May, you’ll need this new form of ID to board domestic flights, enter U.S. military bases, or access federal buildings. The good news is that if you’re not ready for a REAL ID by the deadline, you can still use a standard driver’s license for everyday activities like driving, voting, and age verification for alcohol and tobacco purchases. Alternatively, you can apply for an enhanced driver’s license, which provides additional benefits, including the ability to cross borders into Canada, Mexico, and beyond.

Obtaining a REAL ID is a simple process, but it does require additional documentation. When applying, you’ll need to bring proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or passport, proof of your Social Security number, and two documents verifying your Minnesota residency. You also need to provide original documents, as photocopies, digital images, or laminated copies won’t be accepted.

While you can still use your passport or other approved IDs for air travel, it’s a good idea to check your current driver’s license to see if it meets the REAL ID standards. You can easily apply for the REAL ID at your local DVS center. The sooner you apply, the better, to avoid the rush as the deadline approaches. If you're flying or visiting federal buildings after May 7, 2025, don’t be caught off guard—get your REAL ID today!
