Kim Yaroshevskaya, a beloved icon in Quebec's cultural history, has passed away at the age of 101. Known for her unforgettable roles as Fanfreluche and Grand-Mère in the children’s programs Fanfreluche and Passe-Partout , Yaroshevskaya’s contributions left an indelible mark on generations. Her passing, confirmed by the Union des artistes and her family, was met with heartfelt tributes from the artistic and political community alike.

Born in Moscow on October 1, 1923, Yaroshevskaya immigrated to Quebec at the age of 10 after the tragic loss of her parents, who were political revolutionaries. Despite her challenging beginnings, she thrived in her adopted home, mastering French and pursuing her passion for the arts. She trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and soon joined the theater troupe Le Grenier , where her creative talents flourished.
It was in the 1950s that she created Fanfreluche, a whimsical doll character who brought to life enchanting tales on Radio-Canada. The program, which ran from 1968 to 1971, became a cherished part of childhood for many, offering 46 episodes of imaginative storytelling. Yaroshevskaya’s warmth and charm reemerged in Passe-Partout (1977–1987) as Grand-Mère, a wise and loving figure adored by children and their families.
Beyond her children’s television legacy, Yaroshevskaya was a multifaceted artist. She performed in acclaimed works by Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Tennessee Williams, embodying a depth and sensitivity that resonated across mediums. Her contributions earned her the Order of Canada in 1991 and the distinction of Commandeur de l’Ordre de Montréal in 2023, a testament to her enduring influence.
Tributes poured in following her death, with politicians, artists, and fans celebrating her life. Quebec Premier François Legault and Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante expressed gratitude for her unique storytelling, while actress Marina Orsini and others shared heartfelt memories of her profound impact. Yaroshevskaya’s legacy as a poet of the screen and stage, bringing beauty and wonder to audiences, remains unparalleled.
Her friend and fellow actress Sophie Faucher described her as a person of exceptional grace and creativity. “Despite her small stature, she was a force of nature,” Faucher remarked, recalling Yaroshevskaya’s ability to find joy in the simplest moments and her rare talent for connecting deeply with others.
Kim Yaroshevskaya’s life was a journey filled with art, resilience, and love. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and touch hearts for generations.
