Rockets vs Hawks Postponed Due to Winter Storm in Atlanta
The NBA game between the Houston Rockets and the Atlanta Hawks, which was scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed due to a powerful winter storm sweeping through the Atlanta area. The decision to delay the match was made by the league to ensure the safety of players, fans, and staff, given the hazardous icy conditions and severe weather in the region.
The game was initially set to tip-off at 3 p.m. ET, but the icy conditions in Georgia and surrounding areas prompted the NBA to call off the event. The winter storm, which hit the southern U.S. hard, brought a mix of heavy snow and freezing rain, causing significant disruptions in the region. Roads were expected to refreeze as temperatures plummeted overnight, making travel even more treacherous. This storm affected not only the game but also had widespread impacts on the city's infrastructure, including causing power outages. At least 110,000 customers in the Atlanta area were without power as trees fell onto power lines, creating dangerous situations.

The postponed game adds to the series of disruptions in the NBA’s schedule, as this is the third game to be postponed in just one day. Alongside the Rockets-Hawks matchup, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers also had their games canceled due to wildfires raging across Southern California. Both the Lakers’ game against the San Antonio Spurs and the Clippers’ matchup against the Charlotte Hornets were postponed for safety reasons as well, making it a challenging Saturday for NBA fans. These games, like the Rockets-Hawks contest, have not yet been rescheduled.
The Hawks, now facing a break in their schedule, won’t return to the court until Tuesday, when they’ll host the Phoenix Suns. On the other hand, the Rockets are gearing up for their next game against the Memphis Grizzlies, scheduled for Monday in Houston.
In addition to the disruption caused to the basketball games, the winter storm also led to chaos at Atlanta’s busy Hartsfield-Jackson airport, where over 900 flights were canceled on Friday alone. Passengers were left stranded, and travel plans were severely disrupted as flights were grounded due to the hazardous conditions. The storm also caused a notable incident involving a Delta Airlines flight. A jet bound for Minneapolis had to abort its takeoff due to an engine problem. While the incident occurred during the snowstorm, it was not immediately clear whether the weather played a role in the engine malfunction. Fortunately, all 201 passengers and crew members were safely evacuated, with one injured passenger sent to the hospital.
As the weather continues to affect Atlanta and other parts of the southern U.S., authorities are urging residents to stay off the roads and be cautious of icy conditions. The NBA has stated that they will provide an update regarding the rescheduling of the postponed Rockets-Hawks game once a new date is determined. For now, the safety of everyone involved remains the top priority.
